"Lieutenant, JG" or "Lieutenant, Junior Grade" is the second lowest commissioned officer rank in Starfleet. "Jay Gee's" as they are known are senior to Ensigns, but junior to Lieutenants.

The rank of Lieutenant, JG is granted to Ensigns who have established themselves as officers deserving of more responsibility. Promotion to Lieutenant, JG is often granted by the Officer's Commanding Officer.

RESPONSIBILITIES Edit

Lieutenant, JGs are assigned most often as Division Officers aboard Starships, answerable to the Department head

INSIGNIA Edit

As described by the Starfleet Field Manual's protocols for uniforms and insignias, the insignia for Lieutenant, Junior Grade shall be one (1) solid gold circular pip and one (1) black pip with gold borders on the officer's right collar on all uniforms.

The insignia for Lieutenant JG is directly descendant from ancient Naval insignia for Lieutenant JG, which was most often depicted by one regular gold stripe below a half-thickness gold stripe on the officer's uniform sleve or shoulder board.
